Get involved

Missed our GBM but still want to get involved? Here’s how:

Synapse Education

One of Syanpse’s primary missions is to foster involvement with the St. Louis community among WashU students by hosting many unique outreach programs. We are involved with local St. Louis area elementary and high schools to teach basic neuroscience through hands on demos for the students in order to foster an excitement for science at a young age. If you think working with K-5 students might be of interest to you, check out our Synapse 101 and Demo Days pages for more information and click the sign up links below to get involved. If you’d rather work with high school students, then Synapse Scholars is what you’re looking for. Sign up by noon this Friday (Sept 14th) in order to participate.

CPSR

We are also involved with helping with the rehabilitation process for kids with cerebral palsy by helping run basketball, dance, martial arts, and swimming classes for the children. No priory experience with these sports is necessary to participate. The CPSR program is run in conjunction with St. Louis Children’s Hospital and is a great way to get directly involved with the medical community/process if you are thinking about entering the field. Sign up by noon this Friday (Sept 14th) in order to participate.

Sunrise on Clayton

Synapse also partners with the assisted living home, Sunrise on Clayton, to help the elderly patients experience mental stimulation through playing games, solving puzzles, and ice cream socials. We will set up transportation for groups of volunteers to go the Sunrise location near downtown Clayton, and all that is needed to participate is attending a one-hour orientation/training session hosted by Sunrise’s volunteer coordinator that will be held on campus. Sign up by noon this Friday (Sept 14th) in order to participate.

Shadowing experience

An important part of the premed process is gaining direct experience with how health care workers go throughout their day via shadowing experiences. Synapse partners with Barnes Jewish neurologists, neurosurgeons, and pain management physicians in order to provide students with a one-time shadowing experience. If students find it enjoyable, they are welcome to set up another experience on their own with their physician/surgeon. Space is limited to be sure to sign up by noon this Friday (Sept 14th) in order to participate.

Exec experience

Interested in getting experience as an executive while still a freshman? Or have you yet to have an exec position? Synapse’s philanthropy committee has spots open for new members to come and get directly involved with Syanpse’s function. Previous Philanthropy chairs have been involved with hosting 5k run/walks to raise awareness for various disorders and setting up card making events for the elderly at Sunrise at Clayton. Sign up by noon this Friday (Sept 14th) in order to participate.
